Þórsmörk is home to the best hiking trails in Iceland with beautiful panoramic views of the Þórsmörk Valley and the surrounding mountains and glaciers

Getting here is part of the adventure!

The Volcano Huts are located 30 kilometers inland from highway no. 1 and the drive up road F249 to Þórsmörk offers a scenic experience in itself with 4x4 trail driving and river crossings along the way. The 1-hour drive from the highway leads you on along the valley floor with beautiful scenery of volcanoes and glaciers towering above.

Northern lights & stargazing

Stay up after dark, and you might spot the elusive aurora borealis, or a shooting star skipping across the Arctic sky. Conditions in Þórsmörk for viewing the Northern Lights and the starry sky are often favorable in fall and winter as the high mountains and glaciers around us keep the skies clear from the cloudy southern winds.

Meet Kári the Arctic Fox

Visiting Þórsmörk gives you a good chance to meet Kári the Arctic fox and the self-proclaimed Lord of Þórsmörk in his natural environment. You may have to be patient as Kári sets his clock according to his own time, but when he is out and about, he shows why he is the real lord of Þórsmörk. Best time to visit Kári is during fall and winter months, from late August until the end of March.
